The Happy Birthday Hat rides again

We have a tradition in our house – the Happy Birthday Hat.  We got it when we first got the boys to celebrate their birthdays.  There is a set rule.  If it is your birthday you can wear the Happy Birthday Hat and no one else can wear it that day.  You can wear it all day if you want – to school, on the bus, in the bathroom, wherever.  It is your Hat for that day.

Today my beloved Husband got to wear the Happy Birthday Hat.

Yes, he looks a little dazed – no he did not have anything to drink – he was just that tired by that point in the day.  He is holding his cell phone because his sister Bridget was on the speaker – she joined us in singing Happy Birthday to him.

The Happy Birthday Hat is shaped as a Birthday Cake with candles on top.  It does not look like his cake – this is his cake.

Our friends Robert and Lea have an amazing bakery and they made this cake for Chip.  It is a dark chocolate cake with chocolate ganache for the frosting.  Markus cut up some organic strawberries and sprinkled them with sugar to make a strawberry syrup to top the cake slices along with the vanilla ice cream to cut the heavy chocolate rush of the cake.  Only Chip, Chris and Jesse were able to finish their pieces of cake.  Markus, Vash and I had to quit before our plates were clean.  Chip finished off all three of our pieces of cake – along with the rest of the strawberries and some more ice cream.  He was in his happy place.

Dinner was one of those feel good dinners that goes back to Gram.  Chicken, Biscuits and Gravy.  Basically you boil a big pot of chicken until the chicken is cooked, remove the chicken (you can fry it up after to make it more palatable), scoop the grease off the top of the broth, combine flour and water in a container with a lid and shake that to mix it, then pour the flour and water mixture into the hot broth slowly while stirring and heat it.  I throw in some salt too.  That makes your gravy.  Then you make up a batch of Bisquick Biscuits, cut them in half and throw them into your pot of gravy.

When you bring it to the table, you scoop out the warm biscuits and gravy onto the plates, add your chicken (and more gravy if you want) and then we usually have asparagus with it – the asparagus works well with the gravy.  Tonight I made the chicken and gravy, Markus and Jesse made the salad, Jesse did the asparagus and Vash made the biscuits virtually all by himself – including kneading the dough, rolling it out and cutting the biscuits out with a glass turned upside down.  I know I should have pictures of all of this but we were so busy I did not even think to grab the camera.

After dinner the boys gave Uncle Chip their presents.  Markus gave him a set of juggling balls.

Jesse gave him a red Life Is Good shirt and Vash gave him a green one.

I, of course, gave him a sock.

And when we gave thanks tonight at dinner, I was thankful that my husband was born.

I love you Chip – Happy Birthday.

About Shelly R.

I am a Mother, a daughter, a sister, a wife, an attorney, a crafter and the granddaughter of an amazing woman - my Polish Grandmother. My Grandmother gave me so much, through her love and her patience, her sayings and her time teaching me how to craft and to give to others, that it seemed fitting to share some of that wisdom, to tell some of her story, and to chat about life and crafts in a way that would be a testament to what she gave me.

    • Oops – don’t know what happened. It was in when I first reviewed the post but then was gone. I re-inserted the picture. It was a wonderful cake. Lea asked about you and I told her you wore the dress we got you in her shop on Easter. She was pleased.
